The Garmin Reactor 40 corepack is an autopilot for hydraulically steered boats, designed for powerboats, and this version is paired with the GHC 50. It uses a solid-state 9-axis AHRS, so the sensor can be mounted nearly anywhere in any orientation, and it reacts to sea conditions to hold course. You can run it from anywhere on the boat using compatible Garmin devices, including the Reactor remote and some quatix marine smartwatches. It needs a compatible Garmin chartplotter or a GHC 50 instrument to operate.
Our take
The solid-state 9-axis AHRS lets you place the Reactor 40 sensor almost anywhere, in any orientation, which gives you freedom over where it goes. It is built for hydraulic steering and cannot run alone, since it needs a compatible Garmin chartplotter or a GHC 50 instrument.
From our buying guide
Raymarine describes a typical autopilot as four parts: a heading sensor, a control unit, a drive and a control head. Bought alone, the parts don't steer, and Raymarine says the operator must stay at the helm at all times.
Check before you buy:
- The box list has the drive and control head you need, since packs can leave out a major part.
- It's rated for your boat the way the maker measures it. Raymarine sizes on fully laden displacement, often 20% above the designed figure.
- On hydraulic steering, the pump's range covers your steering cylinder's volume.
