The GPSMAP 943xsv is Garmin's 9 inch chartplotter with mapping and built-in sonar. Sonar covers SideVü, ClearVü and traditional CHIRP, with support for 1 kW CHIRP. The IPS display carries 50% more pixels than the earlier 9 inch GPSMAP units. It talks to NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks for autopilots, AIS and VHF, and has built-in Wi-Fi for the ActiveCaptain app. SailAssist adds laylines and race start line guidance. This part number comes without the radar bundle, and Panoptix or LiveScope needs a separate transducer.
Our take
The built-in SideVü, ClearVü and CHIRP sonar means one 9 inch screen can handle chart work and fish or structure finding without a separate sounder. Panoptix or LiveScope still needs a transducer bought separately, so budget for that if you want live sonar.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
