The GPSMAP 86sci is a button-operated marine handheld GPS with a sunlight-readable 3 inch display at 240 x 400 pixels. It is IPX7 water-resistant and floats, and it ships preloaded with BlueChart g3 coastal charts for the U.S., blending Garmin and Navionics data. Built-in inReach gives two-way text messaging and interactive SOS over the Iridium satellite network, with a subscription required. It can stream data from compatible Garmin chartplotters and instruments, control a Garmin autopilot, and carries 16 GB of memory with a microUSB expansion slot.

Our take

The IPX7 rating and floating body mean a dropped 86sci stays afloat and survives a soaking, which matters for a backup navigator. The inReach messaging reaches past cell range, but it only works with an active satellite subscription.

From our buying guide

What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.

Check before you buy:

  • The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
  • It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
  • A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
