The GPSMAP 8616xsv is a chartplotter and fishfinder combo from Garmin with a full HD IPS touchscreen. It is built to stay readable in sunlight, including through polarized sunglasses, and comes preloaded with Garmin Navionics+ coastal and inland charts with Auto Guidance+. Sonar is built in: 1-kW dual-channel CHIRP traditional sonar plus ClearVu and SideVu scanning sonar, though the transducer is sold separately. It also carries SailAssist sailing features, NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networking, two Garmin Marine Network ports, and built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and ANT connectivity.

Our take

The 8616xsv has the sonar electronics built in but no transducer in the box, so budget for one before you plan the install. The laylines, start line guidance and polars mean a sailing boat can use it as a racing and cruising display, not just a fishfinder.

From our buying guide

What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.

Check before you buy:

  • The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
  • It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
  • A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
