The Garmin GPSMAP 8616 is a networked chartplotter with a 16 inch touchscreen display. It has built-in support for Garmin sonar, and it comes loaded with Navionics+ charts for coast and inland waters, including Auto Guidance+. It connects to other gear over NMEA 2000 and the Garmin Marine Network, and Wi-Fi pairs it with the ActiveCaptain app. Dual microSD slots sit on the back, and transducers are sold separately.
Our take
Auto Guidance+ on the 8616 is a planning tool only, and Garmin says it does not replace safe navigation, so treat its routes as a draft and keep your own lookout and chart work going. Transducers are sold separately for the sonar.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
