The Garmin GPSMAP 8610 is a touchscreen chartplotter with a 10 inch full HD IPS display. It carries built-in Navionics+ inland and coastal charts, connects to NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks, and has Wi-Fi for pairing with a phone app. On the sonar side it handles 1 kW dual-channel CHIRP, plus scanning sonar that reads 1,000 feet below and around the boat at 260 kHz. Every one of those sonar functions needs a transducer bought separately. It also offers laylines and race start line guidance for sailing.
Our take
The sonar side is 1 kW dual-channel CHIRP, with scanning sonar to 1,000 feet at 260 kHz, but all of it requires a transducer that isn't in the box. Plan the transducer and its install alongside the plotter, or the sonar will sit unused.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
