The Garmin GPSMAP 8412 is a chartplotter with a 12 inch full HD IPS touchscreen running 1920 x 1200 pixels. It networks over NMEA 2000 and the Garmin Marine Network, and has built-in Wi-Fi for the ActiveCaptain app. It includes SailAssist sailing features and takes two microSD cards. It ships with a World Basemap rather than detailed charts, and weighs 6.0 lbs (2.7 kg).
Our take
The GPSMAP 8412 comes with only a non-detailed World Basemap, so detailed charts have to be bought and loaded on its two microSD slots before it can serve as your main navigation. Its SailAssist tools are useful if you race or sail.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
