The Garmin GPSMAP 79sc is a handheld marine GPS preloaded with BlueChart g3 coastal charts. It is rated IPX7 water-resistant and floats, and it has a 3 inch diagonal color display at 240 x 400 pixels. It tracks several satellite systems including GPS, GLONASS and Galileo, and stores 10,000 waypoints and 250 routes. Two AA batteries give up to 19 hours in GPS tracking mode, and a 3-axis tilt-compensated compass gives a heading even when stationary. It weighs 9.95 oz.
Our take
The floating, IPX7 body means a drop over the side doesn't have to end with the unit on the bottom. Two AA cells giving up to 19 hours of tracking also let you swap batteries on the water instead of relying on a charger.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
