This is the Garmin GPSMAP 1243xsv, a chartplotter with a 12 inch display, in the version bundled with a radome. It includes SideVü, ClearVü and traditional CHIRP sonar along with mapping, and the radar bundle pairs it with a 4 kW GMR 18 HD+ dome radar. Built-in Wi-Fi connects it to the ActiveCaptain app, and it joins NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks for compatible autopilots, VHF and AIS. Live sonar from Panoptix or LiveScope needs a transducer that is sold separately.

Our take

The 12 inch IPS display is built for better sunlight readability and viewing from any angle, so the screen should stay usable when the helm is bright or you are standing off to one side. Live Panoptix or LiveScope sonar means adding a transducer.

From our buying guide

What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.

Check before you buy:

  • The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
  • It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
  • A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
