Garmin's GPSMAP 1243 is the 12 inch chartplotter version with mapping and no built-in sonar. It has an IPS display, built-in Wi-Fi that pairs with a free mobile app, and NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks. Garmin includes SailAssist sailing features and says its higher-resolution IPS displays on the 12 inch size improve sunlight readability. This version comes without the radar bundle.
Our take
The non-sonar, mapping-only configuration of this 12 inch GPSMAP 1243 means it carries no built-in sonar. What it does have is NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks and Wi-Fi, so it can connect with other devices on the boat.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
