The GPSMAP 1242xsv is a Garmin chartplotter with a 12 inch color display, mapping and built-in sonar. It is controlled with a keypad that has programmable keys, and this version comes without a transducer. A 10 Hz GPS and GLONASS receiver refreshes position quickly. It connects to NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks, uses built-in Wi-Fi with the ActiveCaptain app, and shares sonar, maps and radar over the Garmin Marine Network.
Our take
Keypad control with user-programmable keys means the 12 inch screen can be worked by button rather than by touch. This version has no transducer, so the built-in sonar needs one fitted separately.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
