The Garmin GPSMAP 1242xsv is a 12 inch chartplotter with built-in sonar, and this version comes with its transducer. You run it from a keypad with programmable keys and control knobs. Sonar is single-channel CHIRP with ClearVü and SideVü scanning. A built-in 10 Hz GPS and GLONASS receiver refreshes position and heading. It supports the Garmin Marine Network, NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183, and Wi-Fi links it to the ActiveCaptain app.
Our take
The 10 Hz GPS and GLONASS receiver refreshes position and heading ten times a second, so the boat symbol on the 12 inch screen should follow turns smoothly. Programmable keys and control knobs give you physical controls at the helm.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
