The GPSMAP 1223xsv is a 12 inch chartplotter and sonar combo from Garmin. It uses an in-plane switching display built for sunlight readability and wide viewing angles, and it ships with a worldwide basemap. Sonar is built in: SideVu and ClearVu scanning, plus support for 1 kW CHIRP traditional sonar. It talks to NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks, has built-in Wi-Fi for the ActiveCaptain app, and offers J1939 engine connectivity. Optional BlueChart g3 Vision charts and Panoptix sonar are separate.
Our take
The 12 inch IPS screen is the draw here, since wide viewing angles and sunlight readability matter when you are reading it from the helm at an angle. Built-in SideVu and ClearVu save a separate sounder, but charts beyond the basemap are an add-on.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
