The GPSMAP 1222xsv is a 12-inch chartplotter combo from Garmin, run by a keypad and a multifunction control knob rather than a touchscreen. It has built-in CHIRP sonar along with ClearV and SideV scanning sonar, and it also supports Panoptix and Garmin sonar modules. This version comes without a transducer, so you add one separately. It carries a worldwide basemap for general reference, Quickdraw Contours, SailAssist sailing features, built-in wireless for Garmin apps, and NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 connections.
Our take
The keypad and control knob on this 12-inch Garmin mean you steer the screen with buttons instead of touch, which suits a wet or bouncing helm. The basemap is only general reference, and the transducer is extra, so budget for both.
From our buying guide
What's in the box depends on the part number: Raymarine sells one screen display only, with charts, with a transducer, or with both. Not every chart card fits every plotter, either.
Check before you buy:
- The part number includes the charts and transducer you expect.
- It reads the charts you want, and you know how long their updates last, since many come with a one-year subscription.
- A touchscreen suits your helm, since Raymarine warns that prolonged rain or water wash can cause false touches.
