The Fortress FX-37 is a lightweight fluke anchor in aluminum-magnesium alloy with an anodized finish, made in the USA. It weighs 21 lbs and is sized for boats of 46 to 51 feet. The fluke angle can be changed from 32° up to 45°. It is rated for 12,000 lbs of holding in hard sand at 32° and 3,600 lbs in soft mud at 45°. It carries a lifetime warranty.
Our take
The 45° fluke setting gives 3,600 lbs in soft mud, double the 1,800 lbs at 32°, so on a mud bottom the wider angle is the one to use. The size advice also assumes ordinary conditions, and for storms it calls for an anchor one or two sizes up.
From our buying guide
The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.
Check before you buy:
- You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
- It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
- The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
