The Fortress FX-23 is a 15 lb aluminum alloy anchor that the maker sizes for boats from 39 to 45 feet. It is machined from an alloy said to be as strong as steel at half the weight, with an anodized finish. The fluke angle adjusts from 32 to 45 degrees, and the anchor comes apart, so it stores compactly and can serve as a spare or storm anchor. Damaged parts are covered by a lifetime parts replacement warranty.
Our take
The fluke angle adjusts from 32 to 45 degrees, and the maker says the adjustment increases holding power in soft mud bottoms. At 15 lb in aluminum alloy, and able to come apart, it is a light anchor to handle and to carry as a spare or storm anchor.
From our buying guide
The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.
Check before you buy:
- You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
- It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
- The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
