Hard sand; soft mud with Mud Palms

The FX-11 is a 7 lb aluminum anchor that the maker sizes for boats of 28 to 32 ft, based on hard sand bottoms. It is machined from a high-tensile aluminum magnesium alloy with an anodized finish and comes apart for stowage. Mud Palms raise the fluke angle from the standard 32° to 45° for soft mud. The maker offers a lifetime warranty with free replacement of any damaged part.

Our take

At 7 lb and sized for 28 to 32 ft boats on hard sand, the FX-11 is an anchor that comes apart to stow. Mud Palms change the fluke angle from 32° to 45° for soft mud, so it can be set up for the bottom you meet. The sizing table is only a guide, though.

From our buying guide

The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.

Check before you buy:

  • You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
  • It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
  • The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
