The Commando is a small boat anchoring kit built around a Guardian G-5 fluke anchor made from aluminum alloy. The anchor weighs 2.5 lb (1.1 kg) and is rated for boats up to 16 ft (5 m). Wing nuts and bolts let the anchor be put together or taken apart without tools. The kit comes with 150 ft (46 m) of 1/4 in braided nylon rope, 6 ft (2 m) of 3/16 in galvanized steel chain, a shackle and a Cordura Plus storage bag.
Our take
The G-5 anchor comes apart on wing nuts and bolts, no tools needed, and the pieces store in the Cordura Plus bag with the rope and chain. At 2.5 lb (1.1 kg) and rated for boats up to 16 ft (5 m), it is a kit for tenders and similar small craft.
From our buying guide
The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.
Check before you buy:
- You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
- It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
- The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
