Where to buy
The Dickinson Newport is a small stainless steel solid fuel heater that mounts on a bulkhead. It puts out an estimated 3000 BTU on low and 8000 BTU on high, and burns charcoal briquettes, wood and similar fuel. It measures 7-7/8 in wide, 9 in deep and 14-3/4 in high, with a 3 in flue. It includes a manual damper and a locking ash drawer.
Our take
With an estimated 3000 to 8000 BTU range, the Newport is a small heater, and the maker names boats of 20 to 25 ft as its best use. It also needs a permanently open fresh air inlet, so plan for that before installing.
From our buying guide
Webasto warns that improper installation or repair can cause a fire or a deadly carbon monoxide leak. Its marine manuals put the heater and its exhaust outside the accommodation, and duct only the warm air into the cabin.
Check before you buy:
- The maker publishes a marine installation manual, since some manuals give only road-vehicle positions.
- You can get it fitted properly, since Webasto says installers need to have completed its training.
- You'll have a carbon monoxide alarm inside the boat, which the Coast Guard advises installing.
