This is Canon's 15x50 image-stabilised binocular. Its stabilisation works over a range of ±0.7°, and the angle of view is 4.5°. A UD ultra-low dispersion element is part of the optics. It takes 58mm filters and lens hoods and has a standard 1/4"-20 tripod socket. Power comes from two 1.5-volt AA alkaline batteries, and the binocular weighs 1180 g.
Our take
The ±0.7° stabilisation range is the number to weigh on a 15x50, since it sets how much movement the binocular can take out of the image. At 1180 g it is a hefty glass to hold up, and the tripod socket gives you a way to rest it.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
