Manuals

The Canon 12x36 IS III is an image stabilized binocular with 12x magnification and 36 mm objectives. It uses a vari-angle prism system and has a 60 degree apparent angle of view and a centre focus wheel. Field of view is 86.98 m at 1000 m, and it weighs 660 g. It runs on two AA batteries.

Our take

At 12x, hand movement is magnified along with the view, and the vari-angle prism stabilization is there to damp it. At 660 g it is a fair weight to hold up, and the two AA batteries it runs on mean spares belong in the ditch bag.

From our buying guide

Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.

Check before you buy:

  • The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
  • The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
  • A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
