The Bushnell Prime 12x50 in Slate Green is a roof prism binocular with BaK-4 prisms and fully multi-coated optics. It has centre focus, twist-up eye cups and attached front lens caps. Eye relief is 16mm and the exit pupil is 4.10mm. The field of view is 326 ft at 1,000 yds, and the glasses are marked fog and waterproof. This version comes with a modular Vault harness pack that closes magnetically.
Our take
With 12x magnification and 50mm objectives, the exit pupil comes to 4.10mm, and the field is 326 ft at 1,000 yds. That is a tight picture to hold steady on a moving deck. The fog and waterproof marking means spray is within the maker's rating.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
