The Engage 10x50 from Bushnell is a center-focus roof prism binocular with 10x magnification and 50mm objective lenses. It is rated IPX7 for waterproofing and the prisms are BAK4. Eye relief is 15 mm and the exit pupil is 5 mm. It weighs 29.2 oz, or 828g, and has no image stabilization.
Our take
At 29.2 oz and with no image stabilization, this 10x50 leaves the work of holding steady to your arms, which a moving deck will make harder. The 5 mm exit pupil and IPX7 rating are the figures in its favour for wet use.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
