This is the Blue Sea Systems ML-RBS, a 24V remote battery switch with manual control and auto-release. It is a magnetic latching switch rated for 500 amps continuous and 700 amps for 5 minutes, and it switches under load either by hand or from a remote location. The control circuit runs on 20.2 to 32.9V DC and can be driven by an SPST or SPDT switch. The terminals are tin-plated copper studs and the contacts are silver alloy. The unit weighs 2.07 lb.
Our take
The manual override knob works with or without power and has a locked-off position for servicing, so you can still operate the switch by hand when there is no power to the control circuit. The 500A continuous and 700A five-minute ratings are the figures to check against your 24V loads.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
