The Blue Sea Systems 3001 is a heavy duty on/off battery switch with an alternator field disconnect. It is rated at 600A continuous, with 900A for five minutes and 1750A for 30 seconds of cranking. It is ignition protected, so it can go aboard gasoline powered boats, and it is rated IP66. The body measures 3.85 by 3.85 by 3.10 inches, and the ratings apply when you use 4/0 cable.
Our take
The 600A continuous rating on the Blue Sea 3001 only holds with 4/0 cable, so smaller cable means a lower real limit. The AFD protects alternator diodes if the switch is turned off while the engine runs, and ignition protection allows use on gasoline boats.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
