The Blue Sea Systems 7650 pairs a Dual Circuit Plus battery switch with an SI-Series automatic charging relay. The relay joins the engine and house batteries while charging current is available and keeps them apart when it is not. The kit is rated 700 amp DC for cranking and 300 amp DC continuous, and supports alternators up to 120 amps. It is ignition protected for gasoline boats, and the switch can combine the batteries for emergency starting.

Our take

A 700 amp cranking rating against a 300 amp continuous rating shows the kit is sized for short, heavy starting loads. Low voltage protection also stops the relay linking a charged battery to a drained one.

From our buying guide

Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.

Check before you buy:

  • Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
  • It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
  • If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
