The Blue Sea Systems 7717 is the 24V version of a magnetic-latching remote battery switch with a manual control knob on the solenoid. It holds its open or closed state until someone changes it, so you can connect or disconnect battery banks from a remote panel. Contacts are silver alloy, and the 3/8 inch tin-plated copper studs take multiple 4/0 AWG cables. It handles 500 amp continuous loads with 4/0 cable, carries SAE J1171 ignition protection, and has an IP66 rating against dust and heavy water.
Our take
The manual knob on the solenoid means the 7717 can be switched by hand with or without electric power, so a dead control circuit does not lock you out of your battery banks. The 500 amp continuous rating assumes 4/0 cable, so size your cable runs to match.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
