This is a magnetic-latching remote battery switch with a manual control knob on the solenoid, so it can be worked from a remote circuit or by hand. Once set, it stays open or closed until the operator changes it. Silver alloy contacts and tin-plated copper studs carry the current, and with 4/0 cables it handles 500 amps continuous. It has IP66 water resistance and SAE J1171 ignition protection.
Our take
The manual knob on the solenoid is the useful part: the switch can be worked from a remote circuit or by hand, with no electric power needed. The 500 amp continuous rating applies with 4/0 cables, so the cable size has to match.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
