The Blue Sea Systems 3000 is a heavy duty on/off battery switch for a single battery bank. It is rated at 600A continuous, with 900A for five minutes and 1750A for 30 seconds of cranking when wired with 4/0 cable, and it is good to 32V DC. It is ignition protected, so it can go on a gasoline boat, and the IP66 case takes heavy seas and jetting water. Tin-plated 1/2 inch copper studs accept multiple cables up to 4/0. The case mounts on the surface or flush, and the hole pattern matches Perko and Guest low amperage switches.
Our take
The 600A continuous rating, 70% above a standard switch, gives real headroom for a big diesel's cranking and house loads. It has one battery input and no alternator field disconnect, so it is an on/off switch, not a bank selector.
From our buying guide
Perko says its selector switches can be switched between 1, ALL and 2 with the engine running, and that they let you put batteries in parallel for emergency starting. Battle Born advises against that connection with its LiFePO4 batteries.
Check before you buy:
- Its continuous and 5-minute ratings suit your system. Perko rates its medium-duty 8501 at 250 A continuous.
- It has an alternator field disconnect if you need one. Perko says its AFD models protect non-unitized alternators if the switch is turned OFF with the engine running.
- If it's going in a gasoline engine space, the maker lists it as ignition protected.
