This is Attwood's solid braid line made from 100% multifilament polypropylene. It measures 3/8 inch in diameter and 50 feet long, in blue, and it comes with a spring hook. The fibers are UV stabilized to resist fading and sun damage. The line floats, resists rot, oils, gasoline and most chemicals, and the monofilament fiber gives it a smooth, velvety hand. Attwood says it stays flexible throughout its life.
Our take
The polypropylene construction means this 3/8 inch line floats, so a loose end trailing in the water stays on the surface instead of sinking toward a prop. UV stabilization and rot resistance also suit a line left out in the weather.
From our buying guide
Rope makers disagree on the fiber: Samson calls nylon the right one for its stretch, and Marlow calls polyester the most reliable for mooring lines. Marlow also says wet nylon loses strength.
Check before you buy:
- The diameter suits your boat. Taylor Made pairs 3/8 in line with boats up to 25 ft and 1/2 in line with boats up to 32 ft.
- The line suits your cleats. The Coast Guard handbook's rule of thumb gives 3/8 in line for a 6 in cleat and 1/2 in line for an 8 in cleat.
- Strength figures are compared within one maker, since each labels its figure differently.
