This Attwood dock line is double braided nylon in white and gold. The fibre is multifilament nylon, light and heat stabilised, and the line is spliced for added strength. The nylon can take sudden shock loads without breaking, and it has good wet strength and abrasion resistance. It also resists UV light, rot, oil, gasoline, grease and marine growth.
Our take
The multifilament nylon here can take sudden shock loads without breaking, so a boat surging against the line gets some give before the load reaches the cleat. UV resistance suits a line that stays out in the sun.
From our buying guide
Rope makers disagree on the fiber: Samson calls nylon the right one for its stretch, and Marlow calls polyester the most reliable for mooring lines. Marlow also says wet nylon loses strength.
Check before you buy:
- The diameter suits your boat. Taylor Made pairs 3/8 in line with boats up to 25 ft and 1/2 in line with boats up to 32 ft.
- The line suits your cleats. The Coast Guard handbook's rule of thumb gives 3/8 in line for a 6 in cleat and 1/2 in line for an 8 in cleat.
- Strength figures are compared within one maker, since each labels its figure differently.
