The ACR ResQLink 400 is a buoyant personal locator beacon with a digital display that shows live status and GPS coordinates. It needs no subscription. It positions using GPS and Galileo, transmits on 406 MHz and carries a 121.5 MHz homing signal. A strobe and an infrared strobe help rescuers at night. Battery life is 5 years and operating time is 28 hours.

Our take

With a 28 hour operating life, this beacon keeps transmitting for more than a full day once activated, and the infrared strobe adds a signal for night searches. It is buoyant, and the display shows its GPS coordinates.

From our buying guide

Only 406 MHz beacons alert by satellite. An EPIRB is designed to be mounted on a vessel and a PLB is a portable, handheld beacon for personal use, and registering either with NOAA is mandatory.

Check before you buy:

  • It's coded for the US, since a beacon must be registered in the country it is coded for.
  • It has a GPS receiver, which the Coast Guard prefers, since a position then goes out at once.
  • You know how its battery gets replaced, since ACR and Ocean Signal say the owner must not do it for their models.
