Standard Horizon HX210 Handheld VHF

Brand:
Standard Horizon
Part no:
HX210

Floats face up and is IPX7 submersible (1 m for 30 minutes), both only with the speaker-mic cap fitted and properly sealed, by Standard Horizon's figures. A water-activated light blinks when it lands in the water, even with the radio off; it is a menu setting, so check it is on. It has no DSC distress button. Icom UK recommends carrying a handheld like this as backup to a fixed set, in case the boat loses power.

Our take

A sensible handheld for a tender, kayak, paddleboard or as a backup to a fixed set. It floats, is rated IPX7, has selectable 6, 2.5 and 1 W output, a 1850 mAh battery and an automatic water-activated strobe. A reviewer likes the display and menus. The main limit is no DSC or GPS, and the same reviewer found it not the loudest or clearest. If you want DSC distress calling on your person, buy a different radio.
