The Raymarine Ray90 is a fixed-mount VHF built as a black box. The transceiver mounts out of sight and is run from a wired RayMic handset, and a passive speaker comes in the kit. A second handset can be added to make a two-station system. It transmits at 25 watts, includes Class D DSC and a GPS receiver, and covers US, international and Canadian marine channels. The radio is rated IPx6 and IPx7. It also has a built-in loudhailer function with a fog signal generator. The GPS needs the optional external antenna to work.
Our take
The Ray90 splits the radio into a hidden transceiver and a wired handset, so the box can go out of the way while the controls sit at the helm. With room for a second handset, it can grow into a two-station setup. Budget for the extra GPS antenna it needs.
