A cockpit wheel drive with Raymarine's Evolution electronics, for wheel-steered sailboats up to 7,500 kg laden displacement. Raymarine's wheel drive fits wheels with 3 to 8 spokes on steering with 1 to 3.5 turns lock to lock; its clutch returns the boat to hand steering, and Raymarine says to reach around the wheel, never through it, to work the lever. Raymarine says it is suitable for local coastal sailing only. Raymarine's complete kit is T70152, with the p70s head; it also sells versions without a head (T70248) and without the drive (T70281), so check the part number and what is in the box. Raymarine strongly recommends installation by an authorized service representative.
Our take
Buy this if you steer a sailboat by wheel and she weighs under 7,500 kg fully laden. The maker says to size against laden weight, often about 20% over designed. SAIL's reviewer found it coped in 20-40 knot winds and the install a simple DIY job. Skip it for anything heavier. That displacement ceiling is the main limit, and older instruments may need an NMEA0183 to N2K translator.
