Nature's Head Composting Toilet

Brand:
Nature's Head
Part no:
NH-Standard-Toilet

A composting toilet that sends liquids to a separate 2.2-gallon bottle; Nature's Head says the solids bin holds about 60 to 80 uses. Its fan runs continuously on less than 1.8 amp-hours a day from a 12 V hookup, with a fuse and holder supplied, but the exterior vent parts are sold separately. Nature's Head says it meets USCG requirements for a Type III head; EPA notes that most composting toilets have not been examined by the Coast Guard.

Our take

Worth a look if you want to drop the holding tank and pumpouts on a boat with room for a 21 by 20 by 19 inch unit. One reviewer says the vent keeps smell out and the fan draws too little to trouble a house bank. The catch is the liquids bottle: expect to empty it every three or four days. Check bulkhead clearances first, and note the Type III claim is only the maker's own statement.
