The Icom IC-M510BB is a fixed-mount black box VHF with a CommandMic, built-in Class D DSC and an integrated AIS receiver. The radio unit can be installed out of sight, up to 60 ft from the CommandMic, and up to three stations can be fitted. It has an integrated GPS receiver and is rated IPX7, 1 m of water for 30 minutes. A built-in 15 W amplifier drives an external hailer speaker, and the last incoming call is saved for up to two minutes.
Our take
The black box layout lets the radio unit sit up to 60 ft from the CommandMic, which suits a helm with little room. With up to three stations and an AIS receiver built in, one radio can cover several positions. The IPX7 rating means 1 m for 30 minutes.
