The Garmin VHF 215 is a fixed-mount marine VHF with 25 watts of transmit power and built-in GPS. It has Class D DSC for distress and direct calling to a programmed MMSI, and covers marine channel sets for the US, Canada and international use plus 10 NOAA weather channels. It connects to compatible chartplotters and MFDs over the NMEA 2000 network. The fist microphone handset is removable so it can be moved away from the radio, and the GHS 11 second-station handset is compatible.
Our take
The 25-watt output, Class D DSC and built-in GPS cover distress calling and direct calling to a programmed MMSI. AIS display on the chartplotter belongs to the VHF 215 AIS version, not to this one.
