The Garmin VHF 215 AIS is a fixed-mount marine VHF radio with an AIS receiver built in. It transmits at 25 W on high power and 1 W on low, and it carries Class D DSC for distress alerts and direct calls. Its internal GPS has a connector for an external antenna, so a position goes out automatically with a DSC distress call. A 20W hailer with foghorn is included, and the radio links to an NMEA 2000 network and to compatible Garmin displays.
Our take
The internal GPS sends your position automatically with a DSC distress call, so a Class D radio like this one can tell rescuers where you are without anyone reading out coordinates. The AIS receiver adds nearby traffic to a linked Garmin display.
