The Garmin Signal VHF 220 is a marine radio with a 3.5 inch color touchscreen at 640 x 480 pixels. This version receives AIS but does not transmit it, so other vessels appear with their range, course and speed. The distress button sends Class D DSC. GPS is built into the unit. The MMSI number can be programmed, and software updates arrive through the ActiveCaptain app over Wi-Fi. It runs on 9.6 to 32 V DC.
Our take
This VHF 220 receives AIS but does not transmit it, so it puts other vessels' range, course and speed on screen while leaving your own boat unreported over AIS. The built-in GPS and the Class D DSC distress button are part of the same unit.
